Chapter Ten

Other than Evelyn, I didn’t expect anyone present to understand what happened in the boardroom. A full explanation seemed unwarranted due to Dr. Rainwater’s presence. Even though she worked tirelessly on behalf of the Cherokee Nation, in no way did that mean she was a believer in the old ‘mystical’ ways from centuries past. Evelyn had told me long ago that Carmen supported my granddaughter’s use of her extrasensory gifts. Yet, despite Carmen’s strong intuitions and apparent open mind, until I knew for certain she embraced the shaman traditions of our people, sharing my vision could do more harm than good if it turned out she didn’t. As for the Hobbs foursome, I knew I would have to offer some kind of explanation to keep from visiting the local hospital, since David had suffered a heart attack scare two years ago and likely saw mirrored symptoms to what he experienced back then.

“Should I tell them or should you?” I asked Evelyn, once she realized from my description of the ravine’s pristine appearance that I had been overcome by a vision. She had witnessed such events when she visited the Sioux Nation out west some years ago, and they allowed her to witness their shamanistic practices. At the time there were only a handful of ‘active’ Native American shamans from across America. It wasn’t until after her visit to South Dakota she learned I had resisted the calling.

“My grandfather just now received a vision facilitated by his guide, Galiena,” she told Carmen, who nodded thoughtfully in response.

I should add here that part of my concern about Dr. Rainwater was her ability to cloak her thoughts—something I had noticed about her when she was a little girl. The trait was more developed now that she was older—likely fed by heartache, as Evelyn once mentioned she took the passing of her grandmother and mother very hard.

“What did your guide tell you, John?” she asked.

“The forces murdering innocent people are ancient, and have resided undisturbed at the foot of Devil Mountain for many centuries,” I told her. “Until Simon Blankenship desecrated their resting place in a ravine within the development called Blankenship Pines.”

“I know of this place, it’s been on the news for the past week. It’s also the one Evelyn mentioned on the phone, and we’ve already received complaints from the reservation about it,” she said. “Now, eight people have been killed and maybe more. So, go on… please.”

Dr. Rainwater had apparently agreed with Evelyn that the cook stuffed into a dumpster was a victim of Brigindo’s murderous rage. I assumed Evelyn hadn’t shared Galiena’s assertion about one other victim yet to be discovered. That would make nine deaths with many more likely to come. I confirmed the names of the deities buried in the ravine, and how they were transported and buried by Europeans seeking relief from the same malady of death. Carmen also had questions about Galiena, since the name sounded foreign. I shared that it was a name popular
